Sisters of Saint Joseph of Annecy

Annual Province Day at Cuttack

4th,5th September 2016 : Annual meeting of the Province. These two days were an intensive seminar for administrators, Superiors, formators and members of the Province.

The theme was “Walking with Pope Francis in the Year of Mercy” and the speaker was Fr Suresh Mathew, the editor of “Indian Currents” weekly who talked extensively on the spirituality of Pope Francis. Taking a cue from the Pope's exhortation to read the Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri, Fr Suresh gave a summary of the book - with lots of insights into practical implications for religious life.

His talks on human weaknesses as an opportunity to experience God’s compassion brought tears in the eyes of many. God is a loving father who waits for the return of his children who have lost their way. The pride of Superiors, principals and the Sisters as a whole - brings havoc to religious identity. He explained that when minds become agitated if others are successful and when happiness is found in the failures of companions, a counter witness to the call is created. Just anger can restore justice, order and equity- both in institutions and communities.

“Love for the Eucharist and the Rosary are the hallmarks of a religious vocation. Devoid of these, a nun is none,” he reminded us.Be human and be holy,” was the maxim behind the anecdotes and illustrations. Sisters were challenged, provoked and questioned on the current meaningless ways of minting money in the name of the expansion of the ministries of our Congregations. The ideal set before the listeners was that justice should pervade every element of province life.

Sisters were also given the opportunity to watch the Oscar winning film, “SPOTLIGHT” which exposed the rot in the system of administration in the Church. The message as explained by the lecturer moved minds to contemplate the evil within. It was an enriching experience for the Sisters as we learned to look at the Merciful God by looking at others with mercy and compassion. The two days seemed like two hours. All of us made the resolution to be compassionate and to be people who will live by the values of the Kingdom.   We are grateful to Fr. Suresh for his inspiring talks.
